OKANAGAN — An Okanagan woman is dead after contracting the influenza virus, H1N1.

While Interior Health is releasing few details, Medical Health Officer, Dr. Rob Parker, confirms the woman was in her 50’s. IHA says she died in the last week of December, but it wasn’t until Monday that lab tests confirmed the presence of the H1N1 virus.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The woman’s health history, including if she had any preexisting medical issues, is not being released.

Dr. Parker adds the flu season is far from over and that the situation is going to get worse before it gets better.

He also advises all residents to get vaccinated.

“It’s like getting insurance” according to Dr. Parker.
