Almost two collision claims were being called into Manitoba Public Insurance every minute Friday as motorists across the province struggled with slippery roads and white-out conditions.

At least 750 claims were made between eight and 3 p.m., although spokesperson Brian Smiley said he expected at least 1000 total by the end of the day.

The winter storm, which could still bring another 12 centimetres of snow Friday evening, blew into Southern Manitoba early in the morning.

Several cars were spotted in the ditch along the north and south perimeter.  On Highway 59, slippery roads forced Jody Ryzowski right of the road.

“I just hit some ice and lost control,” Ryzowski said.

Steinbach Towing responded to 50 similar calls by noon.

Marty Rempel said it’s been one of the busiest winters in recent memory.

“Last year I wasn’t tired of winter until March.  This year I was tired by December.  It just doesn’t seem to quit,” said Rempel.

CAA is also reporting an overload. Some of the calls it received today won’t be dealt with until tomorrow.
