Seasonal parking ban ended for Edmonton; targeted bans begin Monday

Seasonal parking ban declared in Edmonton. Global News

EDMONTON – The City of Edmonton has ended the first seasonal parking ban of 2014.

The ban was lifted at 6:00 p.m. Saturday. Motorists can now feel free to park on collector/bus routes.

The ban came into effect at 7:00 a.m. Friday, after several smaller snowfalls over the holidays.

“What better way to start a new year in our winter city than with a renewed focus on getting snow off our roads,” said Bob Dunford, Director of Roadway Maintenance.

As of 4:00 p.m. Friday, bylaw officers had handed out 393 tickets to those in violation of the parking ban.

Now that the seasonal parking ban is over, the City will implement targeted parking bans on collector/bus routes as crews focus on removing windrows.

The targeted parking bans will be in effect only during specific times on specific collector/bus routes where windrows are being removed. Temporary ‘No Parking’ signs will be placed 24 hours before work begins on targeted routes.

The targeted bans for windrow removal are scheduled to begin Monday.

“Windrow removal on collector/bus routes will take approximately three weeks, during which time blowers and trucks need to have unobstructed access to those roads,” explained Dunford.

The City will enforce the targeted parking ban with tickets and towing between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. while windrows are being removed.

“We deliberately chose to use temporary, location-specific parking restrictions for windrow removal rather than implementing a city-wide seasonal parking ban,” said Dunford. “Given the nature of the operation, it made more sense to ban parking only on the collector/bus routes where crews are working. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation as we clear windrows over the next several weeks.”

The schedule of targeted parking bans can be viewed on the City of Edmonton’s website.
