WINNIPEG – A train fire put a south Winnipeg neighbourhood on alert at about 3 a.m. Friday morning.
Five Winnipeg fire crews responded to the blaze in the train’s lead locomotive near Bishop Grandin Boulevard and Shorehill Drive.
Crews uncoupled the locomotive from the rest of the train, a Winnipeg Fire-Paramedic Service spokesman said. The train was pushed back, separating the burning locomotive from potentially hazardous materials in cars farther back in the train.
The fire was extinguished by approximately 4:15 a.m.
Bishop Grandin and Shorehill reopened just before 6 a.m.
The 3 a.m. call for emergency services came as the train was approaching Bishop Grandin. The train was on tracks that run between the neighbourhoods of Royalwood and Island Lakes.
Buses were brought in for shelter in case nearby homes had to be evacuated, but the quick response kept them from being needed, police said.
