The annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Run – known as the “Run to Remember” capped off its first day with a stop at the Chris Garrett Memorial Park in Cobourg, Ont., on Thursday evening.
The three-day, 460-kilometre relay raises awareness of the annual Police and Peace Officers Memorial Service in Ottawa held the last Sunday of September. It honours officers who died in the line of duty.
Const. Chris Garrett died while on duty in May 2004 after responding to a robbery call and he was stabbed by a man claiming to be a robbery victim. Garrett managed to shoot his attacker in the leg before he died.
Deputy Police Chief Jeff Haskins thanked the runners and noted the police service has lost two members in the line of duty – Garrett and Const. William Rourke in 1915.
