Biden tours storm damage, says he approved major disaster declaration

U.S. President Joe Biden on Saturday surveyed the damage caused by Hurricane Idalia in northern Florida and comforted residents hit by the storm, but notably had no plans to meet with Ron DeSantis, the state’s Republican governor, and a potential presidential rival. Biden was joined by his wife, First Lady Jill Biden. “I approved the request within six hours after Gov. DeSantis asked for a major disaster declaration. At the same time, a request from Gov. (Henry) McMaster of South Carolina for an emergency declaration (was approved),” Biden said.
