China’s slumping economy has some economists worried
Description
August 18, 2023
China's economy is in a slump, and this can be due to deflationary pressures, a central bank rate cut, and a sag in the country's once red-hot property market. Our Anne Gaviola chats with The Peak Podcast's Brett Chang about what's going on after three-years of a zero-COVID policy in China, which was once the world's economic powerhouse. What does this mean for global markets? And in Canada, there are ongoing discussions about whether it's time the federal government step in to help build housing stock amid a housing affordability crisis. The country's growing population is putting a squeeze on the housing supply, as interest rates are rising, which puts strain on the pace of construction. How could affordability be restored? Plus, there's backlash over Vancouver's hefty apartment prices. A viral TikTok video showcases a tiny apartment is now being offered for rent...for $2,000 per month.
