Indigenous protesters protesting against the so-called “doctrine of discovery” unfurled a banner during Pope Francis’ papal mass at the shrine of Ste-Anne-de-Beaupre, east of Quebec City on Thursday. The Doctrine of Discovery is a colonial-era doctrine that states that white European nations “discovered” North America when they first arrived on the continent during the age of exploration.
