Regis Korchinski-Paquet case: Toronto police chief says force will examine how they could do better

Toronto Police Chief James Ramer responded to questions surrounding Regis Korchinski-Paquet being outside on a balcony alone, saying the Special Investigations Unit gave detail of the circumstances in a report saying when police arrived two officers blocked her from getting to her mother and brother before allowing her back into the apartment to use the bathroom. The report said she then went out onto the 24th-floor balcony and prevented officers from joining her by holding her body against the door. Ramer’s press conference came after the report was released Wednesday by Ontario’s police watchdog which concluded there are no grounds to charge officers who were in Regis Korchinski-Paquet’s home at the time of her death. The 29-year-old Toronto woman fell to her death in May after police were called to her apartment. Ramer said as part of their review they would examine if there are ways to “do better.” He also responded to a question about the family’s lawyer saying she deserved a “duty of care” as soon as officers arrived, saying officers “tried their best” but there was a “tragic outcome.”
