Famed author Farley Mowat was celebrated in his hometown of Port Hope on Monday - not for his extensive literary contributions rather for his wartime service to Canada. Family of Mowat unveiled his officer tunic in the foyer of the town library during a service hosted by the town and the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment. Captain Mowat served briefly in France in June 1940 and then in 1943 he commanded a rifle platoon as part of Operation Husky, the Allied invasion of Sicily. He later worked as an intelligence agent with the regiment in the Netherlands. The author of 42 books also formed the first Canadian army museum collection team. Mowat died in port hope in 2014 at the age of 92.
