B.C. Coastal First Nations oppose Conservative motion on Liberal pipeline plan, overriding tanker ban

Gaagwiis Jason Alsop, council president of the Haida Nation spoke in Ottawa on Tuesday ahead of a Conservative motion that seeks to reaffirm the Liberals pipeline plan from Alberta to B.C., as well as overriding the northern British Columbia oil tanker ban. “These projects continue to add risks to our self-sufficiency and our food security,” Gaagwiis said adding that “we survive off what the ocean provides… Our coastal economy contributes over three billion every year and is continuing to grow. It employs up to 30 per cent of the people on the north coast.” He said the tanker ban remaining “fully intact is foundational,” and that the Conservative motion “ignores the important duty to consult and work together.”
