Global National: July 16

Canada’s largest city was hit by a torrential downpour on Tuesday. The intense storm dumped so much rain on Toronto, it turned highways and streets into rivers, snarling traffic and knocking out power to multiple neighbourhoods. In the U.S., attention is growing on J.D. Vance – the man former U.S. president Donald Trump has picked to be his running mate. Plus, days after the attempt on Trump’s life, concerns about the RCMP’s struggle to recruit officers tasked with protecting Canadian politicians are being raised as well. In British Columbia, there are renewed calls for a complete overhaul of the province’s foster system, following a devastating report into the death of an 11-year-old Indigenous boy in 2021. And Canada’s Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is facing tough questions about her political future, amid reports of tension between Freeland and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Plus, health care was front and centre at the premiers’ annual meeting in Halifax.
