Hurricane Beryl struck the coast of Texas as a Category 1 storm, causing widespread damage and dangerous conditions. The storm, which weakened from a hurricane after pounding the coastal town of Matagorda, re-strengthened and became a hurricane again late Sunday.
During a press conference on Monday, Houston Mayor John Whitmire urged residents to “shelter in place” as the city was hit hard by the storm. “We’re in an emergency, we’re in a rescue mode,” he said.
