It was 40 years ago that a relatively small city in northern Alberta saw the world's largest shopping centre open its doors about 12 kilometres away from the downtown core.

Wednesday marks the 40th anniversary of the West Edmonton Mall opening its doors to the public. The audacious shopping centre remains a popular and iconic fixture in the city.
