A pigeon due to be put down in Australia after apparently flying across the Pacific was spared the death sentence on Friday.

A racing pigeon has survived an extraordinary 13,000-kilometre Pacific Ocean crossing from the United States to find a new home in Australia.

The Belgian bird breeders were 'shocked' by the price tag on New Kim, their speedy female pigeon.

The aged, "super rare" capsule, containing a message, appears to have been sent by a soldier during the First World War.

"A lot of the breeds have been out there for generations."

The City of Saskatoon said relocating or displacing the birds is not recommended because they are likely to fly back or move into other civic spaces.
