Another 21 people were taken to a hospital, some of them in critical condition, following the crash late Friday, said senior police officer Mohit Aggarwal.

Many of the victims were asleep when the blaze began, according to Yogesh, a police spokesman who uses one name. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

A fire engulfed a shoddily built budget hotel in central New Delhi early Tuesday, killing 17 people and injuring at least four others, including a woman from Myanmar who leapt from an upper floor to escape the flames, Indian authorities said.

More than 50 people have been taken to a hospital. The dead included 11 women, fire officials said.
