CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – A P.E.I. man has been sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to a theft of a large amount of copper wire that had a profound effect on a company’s business.

The cost of replacing the wire, when all expenses were factored in, approached $150,000.

The sentence was imposed Tuesday in the case of Ronald Laybolt, 27, of Dingwells Mills, who pleaded guilty to charges of break, enter and theft.

He was charged in connection with thefts at Chapman Brothers Construction Ltd. and Atlantic Enterprise Ltd.

The theft of the copper wire forced the company to shut down for a number of weeks, placing it in a situation where it could not complete existing contracts or bid on new ones.

Crown prosecutor Cheryl Schurman indicated the losses to Chapman Brothers were in the millions of dollars.
