Durham Regional Police say a lockdown has been lifted after a stabbing at a Whitby school on Monday sent a 14-year-old girl to hospital.
Police said the stabbing happened at Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School on Dryden Boulevard at around noon.
The school was under a lockdown as the suspect was not located right away but it was lifted, police said.
Police said a 14-year-old girl was transported to a Toronto-area hospital in serious but non-life threatening condition.
Another 14-year-old girl was taken into custody.
It’s not clear if both girls knew each other, police said.
Meanwhile, Durham Catholic District School Board issued a statement about the incident and said police were notified immediately and that there is no ongoing safety concerns.
“Professional support staff are available for anyone who may be experiencing heightened emotions at this time,” the statement read. “Students or their parents/guardians are encouraged to contact the school or reach out to a trusted staff member to arrange support if needed.”
