HALIFAX, NS – A four-metre high concrete arch has been officially unveiled as Nova Scotia’s first monument dedicated to peace officers killed in the line of duty.
The arch is located on the Grand Parade near Halifax City Hall.
Co-designer Cody Stephenson says translucent concrete and glass fibres will enable the monument to emit light at night.
Although the design is traditional, he says the application of modern materials in the pillars should distinguish the monument’s qualities.
Wreaths were laid at the foot of the monument in a ceremony yesterday in memory of the 21 peace officers who died while carrying out their duties in the province.
Their names are inscribed on a plaque mounted on the arch’s inner walls.
The list of names begins with Halifax constable Matthew Gardner, who was the first officer to die in the line of duty in 1861.
It ends with the name of RCMP Sergeant Mark Gallagher, who was killed in last January’s earthquake in Haiti while serving with the United Nations.
