GALLERY: Portables for flood-displaced students finally completed

CALGARY- The finishing touches have been put on nearly two dozen modulars that the province commissioned after schools were badly damaged in the June flood.

12 modulars have gone up in the yard of Earl Grey School in the community of Mount Royal, for students displaced from Elbow Park School. However, the Calgary Board of Education still has not been told when the 200 students can be moved there.

High River students will get into the 10 new modulars in their community on Wednesday, after months of taking classes in community centres and gymnasiums.

The contractor, Enzo Developments, was supposed to have the portables done by September, but says the job was large and complex—the equivalent to building three schools.

“They are state of the art, they are made out of sit panels they are very thick on insulation,” explains Tim Claughton from Enzo Developments. “In addition, the air movement is changed 12 times per hour which is significant and important for the health of the children.”

The 54 portables also feature interactive smart boards, washrooms and teacher rooms. An inflatable gym will also be put in the parking lot at Earl Grey School.

The total cost of the Calgary modulars is pegged at around $5 million.
