A man in his 60s died after he was hit by a semi-tractor trailer on the Yellowhead Highway by Elk Island National Park early Friday morning.

First responders were called at 4:49 a.m. to the intersection of Range Road 210 and Highway 16 east of Edmonton, RCMP said.

A 62-year-old man from Ardrossan was declared dead at the scene of the crash.

The eastbound lanes, where the crash occurred, were closed for several hours as police investigated, RCMP said.

The highway is now open, police confirmed, though the investigation continues.
