WINNIPEG — Kyle Walters was officially named general manager of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Tuesday morning.

Walters has been the team’s acting GM since the firing of Joe Mack mid-August.

A former player and Grey Cup champion, Walters played six seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats before moving behind the bench, taking over the defensive co-ordinator role at his alma mater, the Guelph Gryphons, in 2004. Walters was promoted to head coach of the CIS team two years later.

The 40-year-old returned to the CFL in 2009 with the Bombers as special teams coach under new bench boss Paul LaPolice. Now Walters has been handed the responsibility of rebuilding a team that has managed only nine wins in 36 games since its Grey Cup appearance in 2011.

Walters may not have been president and CEO Wade Miller’s initial choice to replace Mack, but Miller has been glowing in his remarks about the work Walters has done in his role as acting GM.
