Nine foreigners found in shipping container detained

MONTREAL – Nine foreign nationals discovered aboard a vessel from Morocco at the Port of Montreal at 2 a.m. Thursday are being detained, in a possible case of human trafficking.

"All are in good health," said Jacqueline Roby, a Canada Border Services Agency spokeswoman. She would not reveal the sexes or ages of those who are being detained.

Earlier reports had put the number of illegal immigrants at 12.

They were found in a shipping container belonging to a company called Termont-Montreal, according to a Port of Montreal worker who did not want to give his name.

The last ship to unload cargo at the company’s dock arrived in Montreal on Oct. 5.

Port of Montreal guards turned away several members of the media and referred them to Canada Border Services Agency.

The RCMP also were involved, although an RCMP spokeswoman declined to comment.
