Apple acquires 3D sensor-maker PrimeSense

TORONTO – Technology giant Apple Inc. has purchased the 3D senor-maker PrimeSense, a spokesperson confirmed Monday.

“We can confirm the deal with Apple. Further than that, we cannot comment at this stage,” a spokesperson told Global News.

Global News first reported the possible acquisition last week, citing reports that Apple had purchased PrimeSense for US$345 million.

Though PrimeSense did not comment on the amount of the acquisition, publications including Bussiness Week and The Guardian reported Monday that the total amount Apple paid for the company was US$350 million.

Apple has yet to comment on the matter.

The Israeli company makes 3D sensors that allow devices to see scenes in 3D, allowing the user to control their devices with hand gestures.

Through technology called “depth sensing” the 3D-sensing technology can identify people – including their body properties, movements and gestures – differentiate objects such as furniture, and recognize the location of walls and floors.

The technology originally powered Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect, but Microsoft has since begun developing its own gesture technology.

Apple’s acquisition of PrimeSense means that it could be working towards including gesture controls to its products, like Apple TV.
