QUEBEC – The police chief of Levis, Quebec, was arrested Wednesday night for allegedly driving under the influence.

Jean-Francois Roy, 55, was apprehended in Quebec City at 11:13 p.m. and a breath test showed he had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood, Quebec City police said.

The City of Levis – located across the St. Lawrence River from Quebec City – confirmed the arrest Thursday morning.

Roy’s car was stopped after a resident called police to report an erratic driver.

He will appear in court Thursday.

The Levis police declined to comment Thursday, but a spokesman for the City of Levis said the mayor is "shocked" by the news.

"There are people who need to set the example and you don’t expect them to be arrested in such circumstances," said Alain Blanchette, chief of staff for Levis Mayor Danielle Roy-Marinelli.

Blanchette noted the police chief has been suspended without salary pending the legal procedures.
