Road Rules: Life in the fast lane

CALGARY- While going too fast can cause a collision or result in hefty fines, driving too slow can also pose hazards on the road.

A major pet peeve for many drivers is when someone in the left lane is going slower than everyone else—especially on the highway.

“Part of it is a courtesy thing,” says Cst. Jim Lebedeff from the Calgary Police Unit. “When people get in that fast lane and they’re right bang on the speed limit or slightly under, you frustrate a lot of people.”

It’s not actually illegal to drive the speed limit in the left lane of a two or three lane highway, but police officers and sheriffs can use their discretion. They suggest adjusting to the normal speed of traffic around you, not just the limit.

“If you are travelling in that lane and you see a vehicle coming up to you fairly quickly, get out of the way,” Lebedeff adds.

On a multi-lane highway, slower traffic should use the lane furthest to the right, so others can easily pass.
