WINNIPEG — The Assiniboine Park Zoo is already working on a name for its newest polar bear cub, which arrived Tuesday night.

The zoo released photos Wednesday of the 11-month-old female cub, which was left an orphan after its mother was mistakenly shot during the hunt for another polar bear that attacked two people in Churchill earlier this month.

The cub will live at the zoo’s International Polar Bear Conservation Centre, which is due to open next year.

“The bear is adjusting well to her new surroundings at the IPBCC,” the zoo’s Dr. Brian Joseph is quoted in a news release. “She’s a young cub and in good health, so we anticipate that she’ll make a smooth transition as she adapts to life at the Assiniboine Park Zoo.”

The new cub joins Hudson (a two-year-old male, Storm (a three-year-old male) and Aurora (an 11-month-old female) as the fourth polar bear to make a temporary home at the IPBCC until they all move into the Journey to Churchill exhibit in summer.
