Ont. police appeal for help finding Sonia Varaschin’s killer

Police are looking for a killer who wore size 10 or 11 boots and had an intimate knowledge of Orangeville, Ont., authorities told reporters Wednesday afternoon.

Whoever killed Sonia Varaschin knew Orangeville, Ont., the surrounding area, Varaschin’s neighbourhood and "potentially with Sonia herself," said Ontario Provincial Police Det.-Insp. Mark Pritchard.

Police released pictures of men’s boots made by Wind River and Dakota, which are sold exclusively at Mark’s Work Wearhouse, and urged members of the public to come forward if they have any information.

"We’re releasing (the boot details) because we think this is the key to arresting this person and we need the public’s help" said Chief Mark Toomey of the Orangeville police.

Sample pairs of boots were on display, their soles turned toward the cameras.

"A friend, co-worker or spouse will hold the key to solving this crime," Pritchard said.

Toomey said police are looking for any information about anyone who came home Aug. 30. with stained boots, or anyone who has got rid of work boots or will have done so after Wednesday afternoon’s police news conference.

Police said there was no evidence of forced entry into Varaschin’s home.

The OPP said Tuesday the autopsy on human remains found in southern Ontario Sunday confirmed they were those of the missing nurse and ruled the case a homicide.

Varaschin was reported missing after she failed to turn up for work last week in Orangeville – about 80 kilometres northwest of Toronto.

The remains were found in a wooded area in nearby Caledon, Ont., and were discovered six days after Varaschin was reported missing.

Her blood-stained car was discovered later that day in Orangeville.

Police later found a trail of blood surrounding her townhouse.

Police believe Varaschin was alone at the time she was likely attacked, and was taken from her home in her own car.
