Northwest Calgary home destroyed by fire

A northwest Calgary home was destroyed after a serious fire Thursday afternoon.

The Calgary Fire Department responded to reports of heavy smoke at a single-family residence in the 100 block of Edendale Way N.W. at around 3 p.m., according to the CFD’s public information officer Carol Henke.

The lone resident, who was home at the time the fire started, was outside waiting for crews to arrive, according to a Thursday evening news release. Firefighters reported not hearing any activated smoke alarms when they entered the house and couldn’t confirm if the house had working smoke alarms.

Crews used multiple hose lines and a ladder truck to fight the fire, the news release read.

The resident was taken to hospital by a family member as a precaution for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.

The news release said there was significant damage to the home and the structure was compromised, meaning it was no longer safe for firefighters to enter the house. A track hoe was brought to the scene to deconstruct the building so firefighters could put out hotspots in hidden areas.

One neighbouring house sustained fire and heat damage to the side closest to the source.

ATCO and Enmax were called to the scene to disconnect gas and electricity to the property. Calgary police officers were also present to redirect traffic in the area and Alberta Health Services’ EMS paramedics were on standby for other potential injuries.

A fire investigator was at the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire. It is not being considered suspicious at this time, the CFD’s release said.
