Fire crews called to blaze in Edmonton’s river valley

Repairs are needed to the patio of the Courtyard by Marriott Edmonton Downtown after a massive fire broke out in the North Saskatchewan River valley below it. Slav Kornik has the details. – Apr 28, 2023

Fire crews were called to Edmonton’s river valley just before 9 p.m. because of a fire near two Edmonton hotels and the Edmonton funicular Thursday night.

It started near Grierson Hill and 100 Street and flames could be seen from across the North Saskatchewan River.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services told Global News six crews responded to the fire that started in the river valley and made its way up to the hotel terrace at Courtyard by Marriott Edmonton Downtown.

There didn’t appear to be any damage at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald located next door.

The Marriott was evacuated because of smoke but everyone was allowed back in after the fire was under control.

The brush fire was declared under control at 10:15 p.m. It was declared out at 10:48 p.m.

A spokesperson for EFRS said they couldn’t confirm how much damage was done to the terrace or what started the blaze.

On Friday, damage to Courtyard by Marriot patio was evident.

Several areas were covered in tarp and taped off.

There was damage visible to the fencing and windows.
