TORONTO – Though all eyes have been on Typhoon Haiyan and the devastation it caused in the Philippines and now China, another rare tropical cyclone struck the west coast of Africa on Monday.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

One of the strongest tropical cyclones to strike Somalia made landfall in Puntland, Somalia, on Monday night.

Though the tropical cyclone was relatively weak, with winds of 74 km/h, cyclones are rare in Africa. This is just the fifth storm to hit Somalia since records began in 1966.

The cyclone dumped close to 200 mm of rain on the area – the equivalent of Puntland’s entire annual rainfall – causing flash floods and killing more than 100 people.
