The death of a person found lying on a street in northeast Edmonton on Wednesday morning has been deemed suspicious and police say homicide detectives are investigating.
Police did not say how old the person was but noted he was a man.
The road was blocked off with police tape most of the day. The man’s body, covered in a blanket, was seen laying on 72 Street, between 144 and 147 avenues, in the Londonderry area’s Kilkenny neighbourhood.
The scene is just steps away from Londonderry junior high school and down the street from M.E. LaZerte High School.
In a news release issued Wednesday afternoon, police said officers were called to a weapons complaint north of 144 Avenue and 72 Street just before 6:30 a.m.
Part of a street in the area was taped off on Wednesday morning. Multiple police vehicles and evidence markers were observed by a Global News crew.
An area resident told Global News he woke up at 6 a.m. when he heard gunshots and screaming. He said he was interviewed by police but declined to give Global News his full name.
Police have not confirmed whether shots were fired in the area.

“Investigators are encouraging anyone that was driving in the area of 144 Avenue and 72 Street this morning between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. to check their dashcam video for anything suspicious and contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone,” police said.
“Investigators are also asking for anyone with residential video footage from that area over that time frame to also contact police.”
Police said anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
An autopsy has yet to be scheduled.
