TORONTO — It should not come as much of a surprise that figure skating champion Elvis Stojko is stepping into the spotlight to play dapper lawyer Billy Flynn in the musical Chicago.

“I’m the crazy guy,” the 41-year-old said Thursday. “There’s a lot of things in my life that I’ve wanted to do other than skating.”

Stojko will star as Flynn in the Broadway production for eight shows only between March 17 and 23. He’ll then reprise the role for the March 26-30 run of the musical at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre.

“I did a little audition tape, sent it in, and they loved it,” the two-time Olympic silver medalist explained.

Appearing on Global’s The Morning Show, Stojko said he feels right at home on stage.

“My dad is a classically trained tenor. He sang in the Slovenian church when he was growing up. He loved singing [and] I learned from him at a young age,” said Stojko, who also dabbled in acting in school.

It’s something he’s anxious to do more of. “It’s a little easier on the body than constantly jumping in the air and spinning on the ice,” he said.

Stojko, who lives in Mexico with his wife Gladys Orozco, is also passionate about professional racing karts — he’s ranked No. 2 in his division — and active in dirt-biking and martial arts. He said he would like to get into car racing, too.

“It’s the competitive instinct,” Stojko said. ” It’s that competitive drive to be better each time.”
