Quebec premier shuffles cabinet

QUEBEC – Quebec Premier Jean Charest announced changes in his cabinet Wednesday involving 12 ministers, with only one newcomer to the lineup, Jean-Marc Fournier, who becomes government house leader and justice minister.

The premier noted that when he formed his government after the 2008 election he named 26 ministers. His new lineup has 24 ministers, preserving gender parity with 12 women and 12 men "something rare in the world," he noted.

"We are 24 and we will remain 24," Charest pledged.

Kathleen Weil, who held the justice portfolio, becomes immigration minister, replacing Yolande James, who remains family minister, a position she inherited in May when Tony Tomassi was forced to step down from the family portfolio.

Line Beauchamp is Quebec’s new education minister, replacing Michelle Courchesne, promoted to treasury board president. Courchesne also takes on government services.

Julie Boulet, who was the target of Opposition attacks in transport, becomes employment minister, trading jobs with Sam Hamad, the new transport minister.

Monique Gagnon-Tremblay leaves the treasury board to return to international relations and Pierre Arcand, who held that post, becomes environment minister.

Robert Dutil hands revenue to finance minister Raymond Bachand and becomes public security minister and deputy house leader, while Lise Theriault gives up the junior health ministry post to Dominique Vien, with Theriault becoming labour minister.
