Chlorinator fails, boil advisory posted

An equipment malfunction has resulted in a boil water advisory in South East Kelowna.

The chlorination system at the Hydraulic Creek Intake failed Monday morning, resulting in marginally treated water making its way to homes and businesses.

The boil water notice affects everyone in the South East Kelowna Irrigation District, except for residents with wells in the Hall Road area.

Until 10 am Tuesday, tap water used for drinking, brushing teeth or rinsing food should be boiled for two minutes.

Public facilities in the affected area have been advised to turn off drinking fountains or notify users.

The Okanagan Falls Irrigation District has imposed a boil water order for its customers as well. The district says coliform counts are higher than acceptable. It blames recent heavy rains in the area. The order is expected to remain in effect for at least 24 hours.
