I love ebay. And I have bought and sold many things on ebay…running shoes, cameras, cashmere sweaters…the list goes on. However, I have just discovered Etsy.
Etsy is an online marketplace for buying and selling anything that’s handmade. Think of it like a weekend craft fair that’s available 24/7 from the comfort of your home. And one of the search functions allows you to search for all local vendors in your area. You can easily pay through paypal if you want to order online, or if that’s not in your comfort zone, email the seller and find out if you can pickup and pay in person. And if you are doing last-minute Christmas shopping, you’ll have to pick up in person anyhow since it’s too late for shipping.
*Most pricing is in US$ because Etsy is a US-based website, but some local sellers will give you at par pricing. Also, don’t forget about shipping costs if you want the item sent to you.
Last week, I made my first purchase from Etsy…some earrings and necklaces made by a woman in Richmond, known as chocolatecake123. They just arrived yesterday and they’re even better than the pictures online. And to top it off, she is having a “buy 2 get 1 free” sale for the month of December.
Necklace $23 USD Brass Leaf Earrings $12 USD
There are dozens of artists and artisans in the Vancouver area selling their wares on Etsy.
Here are a few of the other locally made items that caught my attention:
