Two people have been sent to hospital in critical condition following a fire at a six story Hamilton Mountain apartment complex Friday morning.
Hamilton paramedics say a 35-year-old woman was sent to a burn trauma centre and a 44-year-old female sent to an ED after being rescued from a third-floor suite at Cardinal Apartments on Mohawk Road East near Upper Wellington Street.
Firefighters say they were called out to the multiple-alarm blaze just before 10:30 a.m., brought under control before noon.
“Very quickly during search and rescue operations, firefighters located a person in the fire apartment and rescued them,” Hamilton fire chief Dave Cunliffe said in email to Global News.
“First aid was rendered by firefighters prior to the patient being put in the care of paramedics.”
The cause has not yet been determined, according to Cunliffe.
“The apartment sustained significant fire and smoke damage. Current estimates are in excess of $80,000,” he said.
