A serious collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle closed off a stretch of Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge, B.C., on Boxing Day.
The pedestrian, a 35-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
“Early investigation results and witness statements suggest the man was not utilizing a marked crosswalk at the time of the incident,” said Sgt. Amanda Harnett.
“The driver remained on scene and is co-operating with the investigation and driver impairment by drugs or alcohol is not a factor.”
The crash took place around 8:30 p.m. on Lougheed Highway near 203 Street.
Ridge Meadows RCMP officers put a tent up and placed a tarp over a body.
A white Honda SUV was also seen with a damaged front end.
In a tweet, Cpl. David Noon with the Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (LMD-ICARS) said traffic was shut down in both directions while crews investigated.
The route was closed for several hours while police collected evidence, but has since reopened.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
