PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. – Pine Grove Correctional Centre officially opened its expansion for female inmates Wednesday in Prince Albert, Sask. This is the only correctional centre specifically for women in Saskatchewan.

Thirty new cells are ready to house low, medium and high-risk security offenders in a living unit that offers remote video court appearances.

The $13.4-million capital project began in 2011.

It was designed to ensure public safety through sound infrastructure and enhanced security.

“This new unit will help promote safety by adding new beds, incorporating a more modern design and adding new infrastructure to our correctional system,” said Christine Tell, the corrections and policing minister.

The provincial government says the expansion was needed to update the building’s structure, as it was constructed in the 1960’s.

It also addresses overcrowding in the correctional system.

Saskatchewan’s average daily prisoner count for 2013-14 is 1,545, while bed capacity is only 1,462.

An additional 144 beds are coming in 2015/16 with an expansion at Prince Albert Correctional Centre.
