Haunted Vancouver: The spirits of the Orpheum Theatre

The Orpheum Theatre is well known as a popular venue for artists to play.

It opened at the beginning of the last century and while it is known for playing host to some great acts, many believe there’s another energy at work.

The men’s bathroom in the basement may be scary for many reasons, but there have been reports of a ghost of a former attendant haunting those who come down to use the bathroom.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Why the activity was so strong in the men’s room downstairs, was because the two people from the paranormal society were women and evidently he did not like it and showed a lot of anger,” says Rob Haynes, chair of the Vancouver Civic Theatre Board.

Some believe the ghosts of the Orpheum Usherettes have never quite vacated the building.

“I was invited here late one night where there was a group of paranormal people looking, and then we gathered in this spot here, and we were all talking, and I turned and right over there at the coat check, on the counter I saw a young woman sitting with her legs crossed, very animated she was kind of in a uniform and she was talking, laughing and telling jokes,” says Judy Ginn Walchuk, an intuitive psychic.

The Main Hall has seen the most activity however. Haynes says the ghost of a woman can be seen standing up to applaud the acts that play there.

One man fell to his death while on stage performing in a Vaudeville act at the theatre. He was an acrobat. Haynes says his spirit is still on the stage today.
