A French-language children’s karaoke DVD featuring a song about a man who goes to a bar, drinks, then goes home to beat his wife has been removed from the shelves at Costco, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

"We got the call from one of our members, and it’s off the shelves now," Ron Damiani said. "Unfortunately, sometimes things slip through the cracks."

The song, called Le petit cordonnier (The little cobbler), is a French folksong about a diligent cobbler who goes to the tavern in town for a little drink after visiting the leather store.

The animated character on the Mes premieres chansons DVD is shown hitting his wife after returning home, then making it up for it later in the evening with some hugs and kisses.

LCN, a French-language television network reported that the DVD set was sold at Walmart, a claim the retail outlet denied.

"We don’t carry it and we never carried it," said Alex Roberton, spokesman for Walmart. "We are so cautious. There would be no question that this would never make it."

The product was available for "a couple of weeks" at several Costco locations, mostly in Quebec, Damiani said.

The product has been returned to the distributor.
