Councillors call on mayor to resign

Winnipeg's mayor says the city's roads and infrastructure will crumble, and it will be the province's fault for not allowing a new tax on development. Josh Arason / Global News

WINNIPEG — Two city councillors are calling on Mayor Sam Katz to resign after a string of controversies including the damning audit into mismanagement in the building of new fire halls.

“It’s time that he stop blaming other people and he resign and take responsibility for it,” said Mynarski Coun. Ross Eadie.

“We shouldn’t have to call for his resignation. At this point he should realize he should go,” said Daniel McIntyre Coun. Harvey Smith.

Eadie and Smith are both frequent critics of Katz.

The city’s former top manager, Phil Sheegl, resigned last week. An audit released this week blamed the former chief administrative officer for a controversial land-swap deal and cost overruns in the fire hall replacement project.

Eadie and Smith say Katz is a close friend of both Sheegl and Sandy Shindleman, an executive at developer Shindico, which auditors said had an unfair advantage in the fire hall contracts.

It also emerged Thursday that the new Winnipeg Police building will be millions of dollars over budget. The former Canada Post building on Graham Avenue is being extensively renovated to replace the Public Safety Building on Princess Street.

Katz dismissed the call to step down.

“That’s Ross Eadie’s comment and I’ll let him make his comment,” said Katz.
