It’s biking season and it’s time to get rid of those old bicycle tires.
The Saskatchewan Scrap Tire Corporation (SSTC) is offering residents the opportunity to recycle old bicycle tires.
The company has partnered with two private sector partners in Regina and Saskatoon to offer the service during the month of June.
“People may have bike tires that they have removed after replacing them, but never knew what to do with the old tires,” said Theresa McQuoid, executive director of SSTC. “We are inviting them to check the garage, shed or basement, and if they have old bike tires, bring them in to these dealers.”
While an environment handling fee is currently charged on new vehicle tires sold in Saskatchewan to pay the cost of recycling, no such fee is attached to bicycle tires. SSTC is underwriting the cost of the program.
“The bicycle tires will be collected and processed into crumb rubber at Saskatchewan facilities,” said McQuoid. “That becomes the raw material for the manufacture of numerous products like rubberized asphalt or crumb rubber for artificial turf, like the turf at Mosaic Stadium.”
Bicycle tires are being accepted at Doug’s Spoke ’n’ Sport in Saskatoon and Western Cycle Source for Sports in Regina.
