SASKATOON – The City of Saskatoon is piloting a new project to improve pedestrian safety at busy intersections.
The crosswalks at 2nd Avenue and 23rd Street, as well as 3rd and 23rd, are being enhanced with red “skid-resistant” markings.
The material used for the markings is highly visible and known to have a lifespan of six to eight years.
Each crosswalk costs $6,000 to paint.
The city says it will monitor the new crosswalks throughout the winter to see if they make a difference.
“In Saskatoon, this is the first time we’ve used these types of markings in crosswalks. In other cities throughout the country it is being used,” said Angela Gardiner, city transportation branch manager.
“In the winter, when there may be some snow coverage on the roadway, the white markings may not show through as well as the new red markings will.”
If the new crosswalks prove to be effective over the winter months, the city will then use the special markings at other intersections.
