SASKATOON – Numerous collisions between vehicles and pedestrians so far this year has Saskatoon police concerned.
The rules of the road aren’t being followed in these cases and it’s not just drivers receiving tickets.
“Anytime we see somebody being injured in a traffic incident is concerning, obviously we want to make sure that everybody’s safe and can get to and from their destination,” said Kelsie Fraser, Saskatoon Police Service.
Rules of the road are something instilled in most residents at a young age.
Although some people in Saskatoon simply aren’t following them, even when the crosswalk is just a few steps away.
“If you are a pedestrian, while it maybe your right to cross the street and the vehicles fail to yield, a motorist can be ticketed for that but it’s not saying you should cross the street because you can, you never want to put yourself in harm’s way,” said Fraser.
While in most cases, drivers are thought to be the ones to blame for a collision involving a pedestrian, lately police have been handing out tickets to the pedestrians.
“You see people a lot not obeying the rules of the road and it’s important to know that even as unfortunate as it is that they are maybe the victim or injured in an incident, they could be ticketed,” said Fraser.
“Everyone needs to kind of be a little bit considerate for each other and educate themselves on the rules of the road because they are there for their safety.”
So far this year, police have been called to 61 vehicle/pedestrian collisions which they say is way too many.
