SASKATOON – The number of students enrolled in public and catholic schools in Saskatoon is up for the 2013-14 school year.

The Saskatchewan government announced on Friday enrolment at the Saskatoon Public School Division was 22,167 on Sept. 30, an increase of 2.86 per cent, or 617 students, from last year.

The catholic division also saw growth from last year, with 15,959 students attending class, up 289 students.

The growth wasn’t limited to the city.

Prairie Spirit had an increase of 2.59 per cent, or 256 students, to 10,139. The school division encompasses bedroom communities around Saskatoon.

Across the province, enrolment was up 1.27 per cent from last year to 170,582, an increase of 2,140 students.

Education Minister Don Morgan said with the growth come challenges.

“We are looking for ways to meet the very real demands in our high growth communities for spaces to accommodate this growing number of students,” said Morgan.

It’s an issue Premier Brad Wall touched on earlier in the week when he said the province needs more schools and said there will be more on the subject in next week’s throne speech.
