WINNIPEG – The faculty association at the University of Manitoba says a strike by professors will begin Tuesday if contract negotiations fail.

Professors who voted last week approved a walkout by 68 per cent.

Conciliation talks are scheduled for the rest of this week and through the weekend if necessary.

Some students studying for mid-term exams have expressed concern over a possible strike.

University administrators have offered professors 8.9 per cent over four years, while the union wants 5.8 per cent in a two-year deal.

The faculty association says in an open letter to students that “money is not the big issue.”

The association wants changes to the collective agreement that would ensure academic freedom, the letter says.
