Jennie Emery passes away at 102

Friends, family and former colleagues are mourning the death of longtime Coaldale teacher Jennie Emery. Emery died last Friday, a few months after she celebrated her 102nd birthday in August. She taught for more than 40 years and 32 of those were in Coaldale. She taught mostly Grade 1 but also started the first special education class in the County of Lethbridge.

Jennie Emery Elementary School opened in 1994 and Emery visited the school regularly, attending Christmas concerts and assemblies. Her connection to the school didn’t stop even when she became frail.

Outside of teaching, Jennie was involved with the Coaldale Little Theatre, taking to the stage in some of their productions.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
