Alcohol considered a factor in fatal hit and run

CALGARY – One man has died after being struck by a car in the city’s southeast, early Wednesday morning.

It happened around 2:30 a.m. in the 3100 block of 17 Avenue S.E.

A 26-year-old man was pronounced dead on the scene after being hit by an eastbound vehicle.

Witnesses say the suspect raced off from the scene after it happened.

“I was honking my horn in the car. I jumped out. There were several other people doing the same thing. We asked her to stop, and she just appeared to be thinking about stopping,” says Paul Christian. “She went 20-30 yards [then] stopped. People were chasing her. Ultimately she just sped away at full speed.”

The suspect’s vehicle was found abandoned on Cottonwood Crescent S.E. Investigators say the car was registered in Chestermere.

“Charges we’re looking at at the moment, certainly hit and run causing death, maybe careless driving, maybe dangerous driving,” says Sgt. Colin Foster. “There was some indication alcohol may have been a factor.”

Charges are now pending.
