Forest fire in Mount Uniacke is now under control, officials say

Many Canadians are seeking air-conditioning this weekend as temperatures climb into the 30 degrees Celsius, prompting heat warnings across the country and forest fires across B.C. Abigail Bimman takes a look at how Canadians are dealing with the first major heatwave of the summer and what we can expect for the rest of the summer – Jul 16, 2022

Ryan Richard, the chief of the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department — one of about a dozen departments that responded  — said the fire in the 400 block of Highway 1 was about one hectare in size when crews first arrived.

At 12:45 p.m., he said evacuations in the area “could be a possibility,” but shortly after 3 p.m., he said homes are no longer in danger.

“We originally thought that there was going to be homes that would have to be evacuated because of the wind direction,” he said.

“That wind has shifted, we have the fire knocked down, it’s considered under control, but we do have a lot of hotspots and mop-up to do.”

He expects firefighters will be at the scene for “a while yet.”

Richard said the RCMP and a helicopter from the Department of Natural Resources also responded. In all, about 60 responders were on scene.

He added that four members had “minor injuries” from heat stress and overexertion.

Nova Scotia is in the middle of a heat wave, with temperatures in the Halifax area reaching a high of 30 C Saturday.

A full burn ban continues to be in effect for the entire province.
